Kuwait is one of the countries that are most affected by the negative Impacts of climate change, especially those that climate change contributes in causing or increasing them, such as heatwaves, rainstorms and other rapid floods, as well as the increase in the number and intensity of dust storms and the rise of Sea level and the and consequent impacts on infrastructure projects and future long-term investment.
Kuwait has seen an increase in flash flood events due to climate change. From 1934 to 1993, only three flash floods occurred, with long intervals between them. However, from 1993 to 2018, eight flash flood events occurred at shorter intervals, about 4 years. The amount of rainfall causing floods has also increased, from 23.7 mm/day in March 2009 to 103 mm/day in November 2018. Sabah Al-Ahmad City faced an environmental disaster in November 2018 due to heavy rainfall, with 2.6 million m3 of water accumulating in the surrounding areas.

Historical Data
Historical flash floods in Kuwait have occurred during various years, including: December 1934, November 1954, February 1993, November 1997, January 2004, January 2007, April 2008, December 2009, November 2013, January 2014, November 2018
Climate changes must be taken into account
Climate change has intensified extreme weather events, including floods, droughts, and heatwaves. Kuwait is no exception, and it regularly faces environmental and climatic hazards such as flash floods. These hazards pose a significant threat to the local population, infrastructure, livelihoods, and the economy.
As a result of the State of Kuwait's commitment to preserve the local and regional environment, the Environment Public Authority (EPA) has developed The National Adaptation Plan. Which include medium and long-term strategies to increase strength and resilience in the face of climate challenges and to increase national capacity to adapt to climate change.
Quick Tips to prevent Flood Damage -
Floodwalls
Floodwalls and levees are self-supporting barriers to floodwater. They keep the building dry and protect it from, unequal water pressure on building walls.
Drainage system
Flood plain zoning
Create an emergency plan
Implement effective drainage solutions.
Inspect and upgrade drains
Sandbags

Review your Property Insurance Coverages
Water damage should be included under your property policy irrespective of any cause. Many insurance policies available locally reluctantly provide this coverage and it can be easily missed out in the fine prints under exclusions & warranties.
Many residential and commercial properties, including malls, warehouses, and industrial units, are affected by flash floods. Businesses may suffer financial losses due to disrupted operations and property damage. The Middle East has low insurance penetration rates compared to global standards, indicating many people lack sufficient insurance coverage.
The low insurance coverage in the region stems from a lack of awareness about insurance products and benefits. Additionally, the region’s economic growth has outpaced the development of the insurance industry.
Inadequate early warning systems make it challenging to mitigate and manage flood risks effectively.
Unplanned infrastructure exacerbates vulnerability, as existing drainage systems may not be sufficient to handle sudden heavy rainfall. In 2018, Officials have estimated the damage at $328 million dollars, with roads and tunnels paralyzed by an accumulation of clay following heavy rains, Kuwaiti daily al-Seyassah reported.
